CHAPTER 17

LANA

THREE WEEKS LATER

“Get this down you, honey,” Jada said as she passed the glass of wine to Lana. “You look like you need it.”

“Thanks.” Lana gratefully took the glass. “I really do enjoy getting away from that house. You’re a lifesaver.”

Jada laughed. “You make it sound like you’re a prisoner there. You’re just living in the same house as your… ex-boss? Husband?”

“Ex-boss, Jada. You know how I hate calling Cam my husband.” Lana shook her head. “It’s embarrassing enough as it is. If anyone else knows about this…”

“Don’t worry, I’m not going to say anything.” Jada giggled as she sat down beside her, curling her legs under her. “I’m contractually obliged to keep my mouth shut, anyway.”

“What about Oliver?”

“He just knows that you’ve gotten married to Cam. That’s it. I don’t tell him anything beyond that.” Jada gestured towards the ceiling. “Besides, he’ll have his headphones on while playing his games. It’s not like he’s going to hear us.”

Lana was grateful about that. Jada’s son was adorable, but he did tend to be a bit of a blabbermouth. At twelve years old, he wouldn’t really understand what was going on. Lana didn’t know how she would be able to explain her situation to a kid who was a few months off becoming a teenager.

“But you’re managing in there, right?” Jada sipped her wine. “You’ve got things to do, haven’t you?”

“I have. Cam put me in touch with some of his contacts, and Simon has hired me as an independent contractor.”

“Oh really? I thought you wouldn’t work for that place again.”

Lana hadn’t thought so either, but Simon had said that he needed some expertise, and anything she could give would be useful. Lana had found it difficult to say no to her former supervisor, and they had a good friendship. She didn’t want to disappoint him.

Working from the guest room had been a little odd to begin with, but Lana had found herself a good balance. Over the last three weeks, she had worked at the desk Cam had provided for her, working out in between projects. She often went down to the pool to swim some laps to get the tension out of her shoulders, even though she was aware that Cam would be able to see her and then she would feel self-conscious.

She recalled the kiss he had given her. Even now, Lana could feel his mouth on hers. She’d been left shaken by the thought that he could kiss her like that, her body feeling as if it was going to melt. There had been a part of her that wanted to grab onto him and not let go.

But that couldn’t happen. She hated Cam. Why should she kiss someone she hated?

Are you sure you hate him? Or is it something else that you’re trying to ignore?

It’s hate. It can’t be anything else.

“I must admit,” Jada went on, tugging her fingers through her hair, “I really thought you and Cam would have killed each other by now. How have you managed not to murder him in his sleep?”

“I have no idea.
