CHAPTER 17
LANA
THREE WEEKS LATER
âGet this down you, honey,â Jada said as she passed the glass of wine to Lana. âYou look like you need it.â
âThanks.â Lana gratefully took the glass. âI really do enjoy getting away from that house. Youâre a lifesaver.â
Jada laughed. âYou make it sound like youâre a prisoner there. Youâre just living in the same house as your⦠ex-boss? Husband?â
âEx-boss, Jada. You know how I hate calling Cam my husband.â Lana shook her head. âItâs embarrassing enough as it is. If anyone else knows about thisâ¦â
âDonât worry, Iâm not going to say anything.â Jada giggled as she sat down beside her, curling her legs under her. âIâm contractually obliged to keep my mouth shut, anyway.â
âWhat about Oliver?â
âHe just knows that youâve gotten married to Cam. Thatâs it. I donât tell him anything beyond that.â Jada gestured towards the ceiling. âBesides, heâll have his headphones on while playing his games. Itâs not like heâs going to hear us.â
Lana was grateful about that. Jadaâs son was adorable, but he did tend to be a bit of a blabbermouth. At twelve years old, he wouldnât really understand what was going on. Lana didnât know how she would be able to explain her situation to a kid who was a few months off becoming a teenager.
âBut youâre managing in there, right?â Jada sipped her wine. âYouâve got things to do, havenât you?â
âI have. Cam put me in touch with some of his contacts, and Simon has hired me as an independent contractor.â
âOh really? I thought you wouldnât work for that place again.â
Lana hadnât thought so either, but Simon had said that he needed some expertise, and anything she could give would be useful. Lana had found it difficult to say no to her former supervisor, and they had a good friendship. She didnât want to disappoint him.
Working from the guest room had been a little odd to begin with, but Lana had found herself a good balance. Over the last three weeks, she had worked at the desk Cam had provided for her, working out in between projects. She often went down to the pool to swim some laps to get the tension out of her shoulders, even though she was aware that Cam would be able to see her and then she would feel self-conscious.
She recalled the kiss he had given her. Even now, Lana could feel his mouth on hers. Sheâd been left shaken by the thought that he could kiss her like that, her body feeling as if it was going to melt. There had been a part of her that wanted to grab onto him and not let go.
But that couldnât happen. She hated Cam. Why should she kiss someone she hated?
Are you sure you hate him? Or is it something else that youâre trying to ignore?
Itâs hate. It canât be anything else.
âI must admit,â Jada went on, tugging her fingers through her hair, âI really thought you and Cam would have killed each other by now. How have you managed not to murder him in his sleep?â
âI have no idea.
